BULLDOGS 1st ROUND DRAFT PICK LOGAN MORRISON SHINES ON DAY 2 OF THE OHL GOLD CUP
Team OMHA White, GTHL Red, GTHL Blue and OMHA Black were all winners on Day 2 of the 2018 OHL Gold Cup at the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ont. on Friday.
A total of 130 players chosen in April’s OHL Priority Selection are representing their respective minor hockey associations in the annual showcase event.
Here’s a look at Friday’s action:
MORRISON’S HAT-TRICK GETS OMHA WHITE IN THE WIN COLUMN
OMHA WHITE 5 (1-1-0-0) – HNO 4 (1-1-0-0)
Logan Morrison (HAM) completed a hat-trick in the third period, scoring the game winning goal as Team OMHA White rebounded from an opening day loss with a 5-4 win over Team HNO.
OMHA White peppered HNO’s Eric Vanska with 53 shots has Morrison scored three times while Cameron Tolnai (OTT) and Isaac Langdon (KIT) accounted for other goals in the hard fought victory.
Despite being heavily outshot, HNO stayed in things right until the end, pulling to within a goal before being unable to complete the comeback.
Kyle Aucoin (SBY), Michael Stubbs (MISS), Ryan Beck (BAR) and Nicholas DeGrazia scored HNO markers while Vanska stopped 48 of the 53 shots that came his way.
Dalton McBride (KIT) recorded the OMHA White victory with a 32-save performance.
HAYES POTS THREE AS GTHL RED WINS BIG
GTHL RED 9 (2-0-0-0) – NOHA 2 (1-1-0-0)
McKay Hayes (WSR) led the way with three goals and an assist while Rory Kerins (SSM) pitched in with four helpers as Team GTHL Red won big by a score of 9-2 over Team NOHA.
After a scoreless first, GTHL Red scored four times in the second frame, eventually taking out a 7-0 lead before NOHA managed to get going offensively.
Eric Russell (BAR) chipped in with two goals while Cole Perfetti (SAG) had a goal and two assists. Other GTHL Red markers came from Cameron Peters (NB), Jean-Luc Foudy (WSR) and Ryan Alexander (ER).
Jack Stockfish (NB) and Dario Beljo (LDN) responded with goals for NOHA as they were outshot 36-14.
James Gray and Joe Vrbetic (NB) split the win in goal for GTHL Red as they improved to 2-0-0-0.
GTHL BLUE NARROWLY DEFEATS HEO TO STAY PERFECT
GTHL BLUE 3 (2-0-0-0) – HEO 2 (0-2-0-0)
Liam Babcock (KGN) scored the game winner 7:15 into the third period as Team GTHL Blue stayed perfect at the OHL Gold Cup, narrowly defeating Team HEO by a score of 3-2.
Will Cuylle (PBO) and Jake Uberti (NIAG) also lit the lamp for the victors while blueliner Lleyton Moore (NIAG) collected a pair of assists.
Marco Costantini (HAM) stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in the win, surrendering HEO goals from Simon Labelle (SBY) and Chazka Bush as GTHL Blue finished a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
OMHA BLACK SPREADS OUT THE SCORING IN 5-4 WIN
OMHA BLACK 5 (1-0-1-0) – ALLIANCE 4 (0-2-0-0)
Knotted 2-2 after two, Team OMHA Black was the better team in the third period, outshooting Team ALLIANCE 14-7 as Tyson Foerster (BAR), Evan Vierling (FLNT) and Ryan Smith (SBY) closed out a 5-4 win with goals in the final frame.
York-Simcoe Express teammates Cameron Butler (PBO) and Ty Collins (GUE) also scored in the win while defenceman Alec Belanger (OTT) collected three assists. OMHA Black went 3-for-5 on the man advantage.
Matthew Maggio (OTT), Nathan Small (OS), Brendan Mairs (LDN) and Cooper Walker (GUE) provided ALLIANCE goals while netminder Matthew Sbrocca (OSH) made 31 saves.
OMHA Black took the shooting column 36-20, rebounding from an overtime loss on Thursday to draw even at 1-0-1-0.
