It wasn’t pretty as the Hamilton Bulldogs had to battle to the end to beat the last place Flint Firebirds 4-2 Saturday afternoon at FirstOntario Centre.
The Firebirds, who came into the game 0-14 on the road and 3-26-2 overall, got the jump on the Bulldogs, scoring the first and only goal of the 1st period and out-shot Hamilton 9-2.
The Bulldogs played better in the 2nd and on the power-play, captain Mackenzie Entwistle (14) jumped on a loose puck to tie the game 1-1.
Brandon Saigeon (21) gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game with a power-play goal at 1:40 of the 3rd period, but the Firebirds wouldn’t go away and tied the game 2-2 at 12:56. The power-play came to the rescue again for Hamilton at 15:41 as Mackenzie Entwistle (15) scored his second of the game to give the Black and Gold a 3-2 lead. After hitting the post of the empty-net three times, the Bulldogs finally closed out the scoring as Arthur Kaliyev (22) made the final 4-2.
Arthur Kaliyev finished the game with a goal and three assists for a total of 4 points and Brandon Saigeon extended his point streak to 7 games with a goal and an assist.
The Bulldogs out-shot Flint 27-24. Hamilton’s power-play was 3-for-4 while the Firebirds went 0-for-2.
Flint goal scorers were Jack Phibbs (4) and Jake Durham (20).
With the win, Hamilton’s season record improves to 14-14-2-0 while Flint falls to 3-27-2.
