A heartbreaking loss for the Hamilton Bulldogs Saturday as they drop a second 4-3 decision to the Kitchener Rangers in just over a week.
The Bulldogs came out with urgency right off the drop of the puck and had the visiting Rangers back on their heels on a couple of occasions. Rookie Arthur Kaliyev (23) buried a back-hand at 8:34 to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs started the 2nd period with a 5-on-3 power-play and took full advantage. Arthur Kaliyev (24) scored at the 31-second mark followed by a Jack Hanley (2) power-play goal just over a minute later to make it 3-0 for the Black and Gold. Then it was the Rangers turn on the power-play and they connected twice to cut the Hamilton lead to 3-2 after two periods.
Kitchener would not be denied in the 3rd as they tied the game 3-3 with a shorthanded goal at 5:48 with the game winner coming with just 37-seconds left. The Bulldogs Will Bitten was given a chance to tie the game with 13.5-seconds remaining as he was hauled down on a break-a-way, but the puck bounced on the penalty-shot and his shot went wide.
Hamilton out-shot Kitchener 40-24.
Rangers goal scorers were Connor Bunnaman (21), Adam Mascherin (35), Riley Damiani (17) and Nick McHugh (10).
1) Mario Culina (KIT)
2) Logan Brown (KIT)
3) Arthur Kaliyev (HAM)
With the loss, the Bulldogs season record drops to 33-14-3-3.
It doesn’t get any easier as the #1 team in the country comes to Hamilton on Sunday as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are in at FirstOntario Centre for a 2 o’clock matinee.
