The Hamilton Bulldogs won the first installment of the “Battle of Conference Leaders” Sunday afternoon with a convincing 5-2 win over the top ranked Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
It was a pretty tight checking start to the hockey game with the Bulldogs getting a couple of good chancers early, one that led to a Ben Gleason (6) goal just before the mid-way mark of the 1st period. It took the visiting Greyhounds more than ten minutes to get their first shot on goal, with shot number 2 tying the game on the power-play 1-1.
The Bulldogs took over the game in the 2nd period with four unanswered goals from Isaac Nurse (13), Matthew Strome (30), Will Bitten (19) and Mackenzie Entwistle (8) to take a 5-1 lead after forty minutes.
Hamilton did a great job in shutting down the highest scoring team in the OHL in the 3rd period allowing a late goal by the Hounds to make the final 5-2.
Matthew Strome and Mackenzie Entwistle both finished the game with a goal and three assists as the Bulldogs put a halt to a 2-game losing slide while ending the Soo’s 8-game win streak.
Hamilton out-shot Sault Ste. Marie 32-31.
Greyhounds goal scorers were Boris Katchouk (35) and Hayden Verbeek (21).
1) Matthew Strome (HAM)
2) Mackenzie Entwistle (HAM)
3) Isaac Nurse (HAM)
With the win, the Bulldogs season record improved to 34-14-3-3.
Hamilton heads north next weekend with stops in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday February 16th and in Sudbury on Saturday February 17th before returning home on Monday February 19th for a Family Day game against Owen Sound at 2 pm.
