The Hamilton Bulldogs didn’t have the finishing touch Friday night as they dropped a 2-1 decision in Guelph.
The Bulldogs totally dominated from the drop of the puck as they went on to out-shoot the Storm 20-2 in the first period, but they couldn’t beat Guelph’s starting goalie Anthony Popovich. As is often the case, the Strom scored on just their second shot of the game at 12:33 to take a 1-0 lead after the opening twenty minutes.
Feeling like they dodged a bullet in the first period, the Storm came out strong in period two and put the pressure on early. A mad scramble in front of the Hamilton net saw the Bulldogs Kaden Fulcher make a couple of outstanding saves, but the Storm players on the ice celebrated indicating the puck crossed the goal line. A long video review was needed with the decision going in favour of the home team as Guelph took a 2-0 lead into the third period.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the third and it paid off as Arthur Kaliyev (2) snapped one home at 3:49 to cut the deficit to 2-1. Hamilton kept the pressure on but couldn’t score the equalizer.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Storm 46-25.
1) Anthony Popovich (GUE)
2) Arthur Kaliyev (HAM)
3) Mark Woolley (GUE)
With the loss, Hamilton’s season record drops to 5-2-1-2 while Guelph improves to 4-5-0-1.
The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 pm when they play host to the Ottawa 67’s at FirstOntario Centre.
