BULLDOGS ONE WIN AWAY FROM OHL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Hamilton Bulldogs are one win away from a trip to the 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup after a 6-4 win over the hometown Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Friday night in Game 5 of the Ontario Hockey Championship Series.
The Bulldogs came out and played one of their best 1st periods of the playoffs and got an early lead as Mackenzie Entwistle (9) let go a shot from the slot at 1:39 to make it 1-0.
The Greyhounds started the 2nd period strong and tied the game 1-1 at the 57-second mark, but Hamilton took over, scoring three unanswered goals. First Robert Thomas (10) took a perfect pass from Arthur Kaliyev at the edge of the crease at 2:14 to re-take the lead 2-1, Ryan Moore (8) made it 3-1 after scoring on a breakaway at 8:10 and then Thomas (11) struck again at 16:13 to make it 4-1 after forty minutes.
Hamilton wasn’t giving the Soo anything to start the 3rd period and then Brandon Saigeon (17) scored at 7:06 to make it 5-1 Black and Gold. In most cases that would have been enough, but the Greyhounds caught fire and within a 5-minutes span scored three unanswered goals to cut the Bulldogs lead to 5-4. After some big saves from Kaden Fulcher, Hamilton got an empty-net goal from Nicholas Caamano (9) at 18:35 to make the final score 6-4.
With the win, the Bulldogs take a 3-2 series lead and can claim the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions on home ice Sunday afternoon.
The shots on goal were even at 34-34.
Sault Ste. Marie goal scorers were Keeghan Howdeshell (9), Tim Gettinger (7), Boris Katchouk (18) and Jack Kopacka (13).
1) Robert Thomas (HAM)
2) Jack Kopacka (SSM)
3) Brandon Saigeon (HAM)
The J. Ross Robertson Cup will be at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock as the Bulldogs host Game 6.
