The Hamilton Bulldogs, playing in the first postseason game in franchise history, went into Kingston Friday night and shut-out the Frontenacs 2-0 to take a 1-game-to nothing lead in their first round OHL playoff series.
After a great start by the Bulldogs, the hard work paid off as Will Bitten (1) jumped on a juicy rebound on the power-play at the 18:44 mark of the 1st period. Matt Luff and Benjamin Gleason picked up the assists as Hamilton took a 1-0 to the dressing room.
Bitten (2) would clean up another rebound in the crease, again on the power-play, to extend the Bulldogs lead to 2-0 at 16:36 of the 2nd period. This time, Luff and Niki Petti got the assists.
Kingston is known for stifling defense, but it was the Bulldogs who shut things down in the third period to preserve the 2-0 win.
Much of the credit for the win had to go to Hamilton’s penalty killers who were perfect as Kingston went 0-5 on the power-play while the Bulldogs were 2-5.
Dawson Carty was solid all night as he picked up his first career playoff shut-out by stopping all 19 shots he faced as the Bulldogs out-shot the Frontenacs 29-19.
Will Bitten earned 1st star honours after scoring both Bulldogs goals. Dawson Carty’s shut-out earned him the 2nd star of the game. Frontenac’s forward Cody Caron was named 3rd star.
Hamilton now leads the series 1-0, with Game 2 Sunday afternoon at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston at 2 pm.
Games 3 and 4 are back at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton Tuesday March 28th at 7 pm and Thursday March 30th at 7 pm.
