BULLDOGS TRADE DEADLINE WRAP-UP
The Hamilton Bulldogs roster is now set for the remainder of the 2017-2018 OHL season.
“All In”, “Making a Run”, however you want to put it, the last seven weeks have seen the Bulldogs make several moves to add talent to a line-up that already featured NHL drafted players like Will Bitten (MTL), Matthew Strome (PHI), Mackenzie Entwistle (ARI) and Marian Studenic (NJ).
The wheeling and dealing began November 13th when the Bulldogs found themselves in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference standings and ended January 10th with the passing of the OHL’s Trade Deadline. In that time, six highly skilled players were added to the line-up with the biggest move coming January 8th with the acquisition of London Knights Captain Robert Thomas (STL), who just days before helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo.
Also brought to Hamilton, Ancaster native Nicholas Caamano (DAL) and Ryan Moore from the Flint Firebirds, who have both done exactly as advertised and that is put up points, both at a pace of more than a point-a-game since their arrival.
On the blueline, the Bulldogs have added Kade Landry from the Barrie Colts, Riley Stillman (FLA) from the Oshawa Generals and Nicolas Mattinen (TOR) from the Flint Firebirds to go along with what many were already calling the deepest defense core in the Ontario Hockey League.
These deals have come at a price. Young, talented players like Connor Roberts, Connor McMichael, Riley McCourt and Reilly Webb are no longer Bulldogs and the organization had to part with a slew of draft picks to make them happen.
That said, when Hamilton’s bid to host the 2018 Memorial Cup was denied, Bulldogs President and General Manager Steve Staios was quoted as saying, “We will have to get there the old-fashioned way, by winning.” Championships aren’t won by making phone calls and trading players like hockey cards, but the Bulldogs coaching staff has been given the tools, that on paper, has all the makings of a championship caliber team. Ultimately, it will be up to the players wearing the Black and Gold to perform on the ice, for what could result in some exciting hockey in Hamilton through the Spring of 2018.
