In front of 6,188 fans, the Hamilton Bulldogs beat the Ottawa 67’s in dramatic fashion, 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at FirstOntario Centre.

On Fan Appreciation Day, Matt Luff won the game on a breakaway after taking an incredible pass from goalie Dawson Carty.

Matthew Strome (34) got the Bulldogs off to a good start after finding a loose puck in the slot. He then calmly deposited it into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 6:48. Niki Petti and Jack Hanley set up the play. After Hamilton failed to capitalize on a couple of power-play opportunities, the 67’s tied the game at 1-1 at 14:55.

The 2nd period saw back and forth action, but the 67’s were the only team to get on the board as the visitors took a 2-1 lead at the 10:45 mark.

The Bulldogs had most of the good scoring chances in the 3rd period and the pressure paid off as Brandon Saigeon (21) took a beautiful pass from Michael Cramarossa and tied the game 2-2 on a power-play. Marian Studenic picked up the other assist. That sent the game into overtime.

After Ottawa came close to ending the game, Bulldogs goalie Dawson Carty calmly took the puck and fired it up ice sending Matt Luff (23) on a breakaway. He made no mistake scoring the game winner :47 seconds into overtime sending the Bulldogs and their fans into a frenzy.

Artur Tyanulin (24), and Mathieu Foget (10) scored the two Ottawa goals in regulation time.

Matt Luff’s overtime winner earned him 1st star honours. Matthew Strome scored his 34th goal of the season and was named the 2nd star. Dawson Carty was the 3rd star after stopping 23 of the 25 shots he faced, along with picking up the assist on the game winning goal.

Hamilton’s season record improves to 32-25-4-4 with their home ice record now 16-12-3-3.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 3-game road trip starting in Peterborough on Thursday March 16th at 7 pm with the other stops in Kingston and Ottawa.

Dates for Hamilton’s first round playoff series with the Kingston Frontenacs have not yet been announced, but keep checking for the latest.
