DEFENSE TOP OF MIND FOR BULLDOGS IN 2017 OHL UNDER-18 PRIORITY SELECTION
Defending was the focus for the Hamilton Bulldogs in the 2017 OHL Under-18 Priority Selection on Wednesday.
Eligibility for the inaugural U-18 Draft included all Midget players (1999 and 2000 birth years) not currently on an OHL Member Team Protected List who were carded with an Ontario based Midget AAA Hockey Club within the Ontario Hockey Federation, Hockey Eastern Ontario, or Hockey Northwestern Ontario in the current season.
The Bulldogs took goalie Kyle Renaud with the 10th overall pick. The 6’1, 160-pound goaltender from Carp, ON played this past season for the Smith Falls Bears Midget AAA. In 26 games Renaud had a 17-6-2 record with a 1.79 goals against average and a 0.931 save percentage.
With their 2nd round pick, the Bulldogs grabbed defenseman Paul O’Doherty (30th overall) from Newmarket. Last season with the Markham Waxers Midget AAA, O’Doherty had 10 goals and 25 points in 32 games.
The Bulldogs stayed local with their next two picks. Lucas Felicetti (50th overall) was claimed in the 3rd round. The 6’1, 160 pound left winger from Burlington put up 14 points and showed some grit with 90 penalty minutes in 29 games with the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs Midget AAA in 2016-17.
Stoney Creek’s Jordan Simpson (70th overall) was the Bulldogs 4th round pick. The 6’1, 182 pound defenseman played 31 games for the Niagara North Stars Midget AAA this past season.
A third defenseman was Hamilton’s 5th round and final selection. Parker Sutton (89th overall) from Oshawa is 6 feet and 175 pounds. He patrolled the blueline in 30 games last season for the Central Ontario Wolves Midget AAA.
These five prospects will join the players selected in last Saturday’s OHL Priority Selection at the Bulldogs 2017 Rookie Evaluation Camp April 21-23.
