OHL Gold Cup Day 1 – Recap
Bulldogs’ Draftees Have Impressive Showing on the Opening Day of the OHL Gold Cup
The Bulldogs have many ties to this years’ OHL Gold Cup, especially with players representing the organization from 5 of the 8 teams competing in the Tournament. Day 1 was a productive day for Bulldogs’ prospects, with them showcasing their talents on the big stage in Kitchener. There were 6 games on Thursday, all of which had at least one Bulldog prospect participating.
Connor McMichael – OMHA White
McMichael’s Team OMHA White have yet to play their first game in the Gold Cup. They will open the tournament on Thursday, against Team HNO at 3:45 PM. Connor McMichael is coming into the Gold Cup after putting up 35 goals and 27 assists in 34 games for the Ajax/Pickering Raiders this season.
Xavier Henry – GTHL Red
Team GTHL Red picked up a 2-0 victory in their opening game against Team OMHA Black, with Henry picking up 2 PIMS in the game. Henry showed great potential this season with the Toronto Titans before being selected 70th Overall by the Bulldogs at the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.
Navrin Mutter – Alliance
Team Alliance opened their tournament with a matchup against Team NOHA in which they picked up a 6-0 victory. Mutter showed that he can play a complete game this past season with the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs after scoring 10 goals and 12 assists in 29 games.
Liam Van Loon – Alliance
Van Loon’s Team Alliance took Team NOHA in Game 1 of the Gold Cup Tournament and finished with a decisive 6-0 victory. Van Loon picked up a goal and an assist in the outing, along with 2 PIMS. He had a great season offensively, posting 15 goals and 19 assists in 32 games with the London Jr. Knights, before being selected in the 3rd Round by the Bulldogs in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.
Ford Ondrovic – HEO
Team HEO is slated to take on Team GTHL Blue to get their Tournament started on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM. Ondrovic showed the ability to be a difference maker on the backend after he notched 2 goals and 16 helpers in 41 games for the Ottawa Jr. Senators.
Jordan Stock – Alliance
Jordan Stock is part of Team Alliance, who suited against Team NOHA in a winning effort in their 1st Game of the Gold Cup. He registered 2 PIMS in the outing. Stock will look to make an offensive impact in the tournament, after finishing his season with the Hamilton Huskies with 16 goals and 14 assists in 33 contests.
Zach Roy – GTHL Blue
Roy will play up for Team GTHL Blue, who defeated Team HNO 5-4, in their opening game Thursday morning. Roy had a 2.93 GAA with a 0.826% in Game 1. Roy has excelled in a tournament format before, backstopping the Toronto Nationals to 5 wins in 7 games at the 2017 OHL Cup while posting a 1.43 GAA, to go along with a 0.956 save percentage and 2 shut-outs.
The Gold Cup will pick up for Day 2 on Friday morning with Team NOHA taking on Team OMHA Black with a 9:00 AM puck drop. Each team is set to play at least one game on Friday, with select teams playing twice. There are 6 total games scheduled for Friday, 5 will feature at least one Bulldogs’ prospect. The games on Friday will determine seeding for the elimination games that will take place on Saturday.
