The Montreal Canadiens, NHL affiliate of the Hamilton Bulldogs, selected seven players at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Canadiens made their first selection on Friday evening, picking centre Alex Galchenyuk in the first round, third overall. On the second day of the draft, Montreal chose winger Sebastian Collberg, defenceman Dalton Thrower, winger Tim Bozon, centre Brady Vail, forward Charles Hudon and winger Erik Nystrom.
Galchenyuk tore his ACL prior to the start of the season and only managed to play two regular season and six playoff games for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League where he recorded four points (two goals, two assists). During his rookie season with the Sting in 2010-2011, the native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin posted 83 points (31 goals, 52 assists) and was third on the team in goals and points. The six-foot, 198-pound centre played 38 games for the Chicago Young Americans of the Mid-West Elite Hockey League during the 2009-2010 season where he registered 87 points (44 goals, 43 assists).
Collberg was selected in the second round, 33rd overall. The five-foot-11, 174-pound winger played 41 games for Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League while also playing for Frolunda’s Under-20 team where he collected 17 points (nine goals, eight assists) over 21 games. The native of Mariestad, Sweden played in six games for the Gold Medal-winning Swedish team during the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship and picked up seven points (four goals, three assists).
Thrower was selected in the second round, 51st overall. The native of North Vancouver, British Columbia led all defencemen on the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League in goals, assists and points with 54 (18 goals, 36 assists) and second with 103 penalty minutes in 66 games.
Bozon was selected in the third round, 64th overall. The six-foot-one, 183-pound winger placed second in goals and third in points on the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL with 71 points (36 goals, 35 assists), 40 penalty minutes and a +27 rating over 71 games. The native of St. Louis, Missouri is the son of former NHLer Philippe Bozon, who played four seasons with the St. Louis Blues.
Vail was selected in the fourth round, 94th overall. The six-foot, 196-pound centre ranked third on the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL in goals and points over 68 games as he recorded 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists), 55 penalty minutes and a +1 rating.
Hudon was selected in the fifth round, 122nd overall. The native of Brisbriand, Quebec notched 66 points (25 goals, 41 assists), 50 penalty minutes and a +28 rating in 59 games for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The five-foot-10, 170-pound forward ranked second on the Sagueneens in goals, assists and points.
Nystrom was selected in the sixth round, 154th overall. The five-foot-11, 176-pound winger played 19 games for MODO of the Swedish Elite League while also playing for MODO’S Under-20 team registering 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) and 16 penalty minutes in 32 games.
