- MONTREAL (June 29, 2012) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the signings of forward Petteri Nokelainen and defenceman Brendon Nash to one-year contracts for the 2012-2013 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Nokelainen, 26, completed his fifth season in the NHL in 2011-2012, his first with Montreal. The Imatra, Finland native notched seven points (three goals, four assists) in 56 games with the Canadiens. The 6’1” 202-pound centre also posted 37 shots on goal, 46 hits and 37 penalty minutes while averaging 8:48 time on ice. Nokelainen suffered a season-ending upper body injury on March 31, 2012 in a game versus the Washington Capitals.
Since the 2005-2006 season, Nokelainen has registered 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) and 103 penalty minutes in 245 NHL regular season games. Prior to joining the Canadiens, Nokelainen played with the New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks and Phoenix Coyotes. Nokelainen was acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes on October 23, 2011, along with Garrett Stafford, in return for Brock Trotter and a seventh-round pick at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Nash, 25, missed the entire 2011-2012 season with a shoulder injury suffered at Montreal Canadiens training camp in September, 2011. The 6’3’’, 214-pound defenceman took part in two games with Montreal in 2010-2011, making his NHL-debut with the Canadiens on February 15, 2011 in a game against the Buffalo Sabres at the Bell Centre. In two-career NHL games, Nash is pointless with two shots on goal playing with an average of 10:12 minutes of time on ice.
In 2010-2011, his first season as a professional, Nash recorded 30 points (5 goals, 25 assists), 58 penalty minutes, 81 shots on goal and a plus-22 rating in 75 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Nash signed with the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent on March 30, 2010.
