HAMILTON, ONTARIO – The Hamilton Bulldogs scored twice in the third period to force extra time on Saturday evening, but ultimately fell to the Rochester Americans 4-3 in a shootout in front of 6,314 fans at FirstOntario Centre.
Bulldogs forward Connor Crisp opened the scoring at 15:01 of the first period with his second goal of the season, assisted by forward Sven Andrighetto and defenceman Nathan Beaulieu.
Two minutes later, Americans forward Colton Gillies tied the game 1-1, assisted by forwards Tim Schaller and Brayden Irwin.
Just 11 seconds into the second period, a Rochester dump in bounced off the glass behind the Hamilton net as ‘Dogs goaltender Robert Mayer went out to play it and Amerks forward Kevin Porter made no mistake on a wide open net to make it 2-1. Forward Joel Armia and defenceman Matt MacKenzie had assists on the play.
At 7:08 of the middle frame, Irwin made it a 3-1 game, with assists from Schaller and forward Dan Catenacci.
With five minutes gone in the third period, Hamilton forward Joonas Nattinen outwaited Rochester goaltender Andrey Makarov, fell to a knee, then roofed a backhander to cut the deficit to 3-2. Nattinen’s seventh goal of the season was assisted by forward Jack Nevins – for his first professional point – and defenceman Nathan McIver.
Five minutes later, Bulldogs forward Gabriel Dumont paired up with forward Justin Courtnall on a two-on-one into the Americans’ zone. Dumont opted to hang onto the puck and fired a wrist shot past Makarov to tie the game, 3-3. Forward Louis Leblanc had the only assist on Dumont’s team-leading 19th goal of the season.
The two clubs went scoreless through the rest of regulation and overtime. In the shootout, Rochester scored on its first three attempts, while Hamilton was stopped on all three of its tries to end the game in favour of the Amerks, 4-3.
Mayer made 38 saves on 41 shots in the Bulldogs net in the loss. Andrey Makarov stopped 35 of 38 shots for the Americans in the win.
Hamilton went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Rochester went 0-for-4.
