A wild start to the Hamilton Bulldogs three game road trip Thursday night in Saginaw as they twice battled back from three goal deficits only to come up a goal short in a 6-5 loss.
The first period was not a good one for the Bulldogs as they gave up both short-handed and power-play goals to fall behind 2-0 after twenty minutes.
The second didn’t get off to a good start as the Spirit took a 3-0 lead early. The Bulldogs finally got some good news at 8:46 as Niki Petti (10) scored to cut the lead to 3-1. Matt Luff (16) followed up at 11:15 to make it a one goal game at 3-2, however Saginaw stole the momentum back by scoring two more to take a 5-2 lead after two periods.
Hamilton came out on fire in the third with goals from Marian Studenic (8) on the power-play, Will Bitten (18) and Brandon Saigeon (8) to tie the game 5-5. Just when it looked like the game was going to overtime, Saginaw scored at 18:27 and then held on for a 6-5 win.
The power-play goal the Bulldogs gave up in the first period broke their streak of 0-27 on the penalty-kill over eight plus games.
Hamilton’s season record drops to 22-18-3-2 with their road record now 12-9.
The Bulldogs are off Friday night with the road trip continuing Saturday night in Flint.
