There was a playoff atmosphere in Kingston Friday night as the Hamilton Bulldogs pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over the Frontenacs.
The tone was set early as Hamilton’s Riley Stillman and Kingston’s Ryan Cranford dropped the gloves in the opening minute and went toe-to-toe at center ice. Meantime, not a lot of offense in the 1st period as shots were just 3-1 in favour of Hamilton at the 10-minute mark. The Bulldogs thought they had opened up the scoring, but a goal from Arthur Kaliyev was waived off after video review determined the play was off-side.
The Frontenacs opened the scoring early in the 2nd period with the Bulldogs responding just over five minutes later as Matthew Strome (33) showed off his stick handling skills to tie the game 1-1.
There was no scoring in the 3rd period so the game went to overtime. Hamilton got a power-play late in the 3rd that carried over into OT and Mr. Clutch came through again as Brandon Saigeon (32) bounced one in off a Kingston defender at 1:19 for the 2-1 win. For Saigeon, it was his league leading 9th game winning goal and pulls him into a tie for the league lead with his 15th power-play goal.
Hamilton out-shot Kingston 31-19.
The Bulldogs finished the season series with the Frontenacs with a record of 4-1-0-1 and increase their lead atop the East Division and Eastern Conference to 5-points.
1) Brandon Saigeon (HAM)
2) Matthew Strome (HAM)
3) Jeremy Helvig (KGN)
