The Hamilton Bulldogs have the early advantage in the OHL’s Eastern Conference Championship Series after a 6-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs Wednesday night in Game 1.
The Bulldogs came out and applied plenty of pressure in the early going of the 1st period forcing Kingston goalie Jeremy Helvig to make at least three huge saves to keep Hamilton off the board. However, the Bulldogs kept pressing and Nicholas Caamano (5) buried a rebound at 9:39 for a 1-0 lead. Ben Gleason (2) made it 2-0 at 17:04 as his point shot made it to the back of the net.
Hamilton kept up the pressure in the 2nd period and two goals, 11-seconds apart, from Brandon Saigeon (9, 10), including one on the power-play, made it 4-0. Another power-play goal from Mackenzie Entwistle (3) and an even strength marker from Ryan Moore (6) had Hamilton up 6-0 by 10:39 of the period. Shortly after, Jeremy Helvig was pulled from the Frontenacs net after allowing six goals on 22-shots. Kingston did manage two late goals to cut Hamilton’s lead to 6-2 after forty minutes.
There was no scoring in the 3rd period as the Bulldogs did a great job of shutting down Kingston’s offense.
Hamilton out-shot the Frontenacs 36-28.
Frontenacs goal scorers were Max Jones (2) and Jason Robertson (8).
1) Brandon Saigeon (HAM)
2) Robert Thomas (HAM)
3) Benjamin Gleason (HAM)
Game 2 in the series goes Friday night at FirstOntario Centre at 7 pm.
