The Hamilton Bulldogs have the early advantage in the OHL Championship Series over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds after a 4-3 overtime win in Game 1 Thursday night at the Essar Centre.
There was a feeling out process for both teams early in the 1st period as a lot of the time was spent between the two bluelines. The Bulldogs offense picked up the pace in the second half of the period, and it led to the first goal of the series as Mackenzie Entwistle (6) took a back-door pass from Will Bitten to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead.
Hamilton got a quick start in the 2nd period as Robert Thomas (9) scored at the :14 second mark followed by a Brandon Saigeon (13) marker at 3:43 to make it 3-0. The Greyhounds got on a bit of a roll and scored twice before the end of the period to cut the Hamilton lead to 3-2.
The Bulldogs hit two posts and a crossbar in the 3rd period, but it was the Soo that got the only goal to tie the game 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
The Black and Gold came out in OT with some jump and Mackenzie Entwistle (7) got behind the Greyhounds defense and banged home a rebound at 1:57 to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 win.
The Soo out-shot the Bulldogs 31-30.
Greyhound goal scorers were Barrett Hayton (6), Boris Katchouk (16) and Taylor Raddysh (13)
1) Mackenzie Entwistle (HAM)
2) Barrett Hayton (SSM)
3) Robert Thomas (HAM)
