HAMILTON, ONTARIO. Marco Costantini denied 34 of 37 Oshawa Generals shots as Payton Vescio & Arthur Kaliyev each recorded goals to rally the Bulldogs from an early two-goal deficit but it wouldn’t be quite enough as Kyle McLean would play hero for the Generals in overtime, giving Oshawa a 3-2 win.

Not the start the Hamilton Bulldogs wanted in their Sunday afternoon game in Oshawa as at 2:32, Allan McShane would feed the puck across the slot in the Hamilton zone, not finding a direct connection, defenseman Mitchell Brewer would pull the puck off the right-wing boards and from the right point launch a shot that would elude Marco Costantini to give the Generals a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later Oshawa would double their lead, Phillip Tomasino would be trapped to the back boards with the puck in his skates but find a way to direct it into the Hamilton slot where it would be found by Ty Tullio who lifted the puck over Costantini’s glove to make it 2-0 for the Generals at 5:45. From there Marco Costantini would begin to turn momentum in Hamilton’s favour, with the team short-handed and a puck laying dead at the side of the open net, Allan McShane would collect believing he had a sure goal before Costantini would flash his glove, making an incredible save to keep it 2-0. Bulldogs would feed off their goaltender’s bounce back and with 8.2 seconds left in the first period, Isaac Nurse shoveled the puck up the left-wing boards to Payton Vescio at the point who fired a shot past Zachary Paputsakis, his 3rd of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 heading to the locker room after 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs would feed off the momentum of the Payton Vescio goal to end the first period as the second period would open with Hamilton pressing their advantage. At 1:52 with the puck at the right point, Michael Renwick would send it across to the left for Navrin Mutter who let a heavy shot fly at the Oshawa goal, going in and out of the glove of Paputsakis, the rebound would sit in the slot where Arthur Kaliyev would race to it and slam the backhand home for his 35th of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Marco Costantini would make another highlight reel save late the second period as Brett Neumann would race ahead on an exit pass from the Oshawa zone and fly into the Hamilton end, looking to break the tie but Costantini would out wait his challenger and deny the opportunity with the glove, sending the game to the second intermission all tied up.

The third period would see the Bulldogs outshoot Oshawa by a 14-12 margin, despite even having to kill a slashing penalty with 5:30 to go. The last twenty minutes would solve nothing however with Marco Costantini & Zachary Paputsakis both standing tall in their respective nets, we headed to overtime.

The Bulldogs would see three, two-on-one opportunities in the 3-on-3 portion of the game, including one with Jan Mysak & Arthur Kaliyev which looked poised to end the game but a Paputsakis save combined with a short two-on-one for Oshawa would see Kyle McLean score at 2:26 to give the Generals the 3-2 overtime victory.

The Hamilton Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday, February 6th when the team heads to the WFCU Centre in Windsor to take on the Spitfires in a 7:00pm start before returning home to take on the Ottawa 67’s on Friday, February 7th at 7:00 pm at FirstOntario Centre and closing the weekend hosting the Flint Firebirds in their only visit of the season to Hamilton on Saturday, February 8th at 4:00pm.
