*Join us across Hamilton Bulldogs social media all week as we celebrate Jan Mysak, culminating with the Jan Mysak Draft Show on Monday October 5th at 2pm! All presented by our partners at FirstOntario Credit Union*
With the 2020 NHL Entry Draft just a few days away, Jan Mysak will have his future revealed and likely very early at that. The talented Czech center has already racked up a tremendous resume; representing the Czech Republic at the U17, U18, Hlinka-Gretzky Cup & World Junior Hockey Championship, became the youngest player in HC Litvinov history, rescued his boyhood club with an incredible performance in relegation to lead the team in scoring, drafted in the 1st round of the CHL Import Draft debuted in the OHL scoring in just his 2nd game, recording two hat-tricks in 14 days and registering better than a point-per-game all before being eligible to be selected to the NHL.
As the 2019-20 season rolled along and scouts got a good look at Jan Mysak during the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championships his draft rankings would begin to rise and continue to move upward as he acclimated and excelled in the Ontario Hockey League.
Mysak’s rankings heading into the NHL Draft vary depending on source but he is widely expected to be selected in the 1st round which would make him the record holder for highest Hamilton Bulldogs player selected, Arthur Kaliyev currently holds the record for being selected 33rd overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The highest ranking seen for Mysak heading into the 2020 NHL Draft sits at 16th overall from Future Considerations while Bob McKenzie & Craig Button at TSN rank the Bulldogs star at 34th but have both acknowledged that Mysak could go much, much higher depending on how the draft goes. A composite result of 7 rankings place Mysak at 26th overall but again with the upward trend in his rankings toward the end of the OHL season shows that Mysak was consistently rising.
When asked for comment Jan’s agent, long-time NHL agent, Allan Walsh said; “Jan Mysak is a dynamic player with NHL caliber hockey IQ. He smoothly transitioned to the OHL from the top league in Czech Republic and pushed his game to a new level. He possesses the poise, personal drive and dedication placing him among the top prospects for the 2020 NHL Draft. With Jan, there are no limits to his potential.”.
With just 22 games in North America to this point in his career, “no limits to his potential” certainly rings true. Having posted 25 points in those 22 games since arriving in Hamilton, Mysak has shown incredible talent in the immediate as well as exponential space for growth in his game. The NHL’s own scouting report on Mysak glows in its’ praise stating; “FAST SKATER WITH RELENTLESS PUCK PURSUIT. CRAFTY PLAYMAKER WITH GOAL SCORING ABILITY. HE HAS EXCELLENT INSTINCTS AND ABILITY TO READ AND REACT QUICKLY TO THE PLAY. RESPONSIBLE TWO-WAY PLAYER THAT CONTRIBUTES IN ALL SITUATIONS.”.
With perhaps the final question surrounding Jan Mysak’s 2020 NHL Draft Day being the anticipation and wonderment of where he may end up playing as a professional, it’s not easy to narrow down. With Jan’s offensive ability and his three-zone approach to the game he could fit in just about any of the NHL’s current 31 teams, opening the door for his name to be called at just about any time in the draft’s opening round.
